Water for Shukria In the village of Hutal, deep in the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar Province, a ten year old girl named Shukria dreams of one day becoming a doctor. Her first step is to attend school, something that recently became possible when the 445th Civil Affairs Battalion (Mountain View CA) established the Malalai Anaa Center for Women and School for Girls in Shukria’s village.
But when the last trickle of water is poured from the jugs in their home, Shukria’s family turns to her for more. She will walk over a mile to get to the nearest well. The distance seems to stretch as she carries the heavy jugs, now full, back to her home. Shukria will do this every day so her family can survive. There isn’t much time left over for learning.
Update: We have exceeded our fundraising goal! The well is in place at the Malalai Anaa Center for Women and School for Girls. Read more >>
