American Support for Afghanistan (ASA) is a non-sectarian, non-governmental and strictly apolitical non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and continuing development of Afghanistan.

Justice for Farkhunda Many of our supporters will have heard the horrifying news about the brutal death of Farkhunda, a 27-year-old woman who was attacked and killed by a mob in Kabul after being falsely accused of burning a Quran.

Here at ASA, we are shaken to our core by the inhumane and barbaric murder of Farkhunda. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and our unwavering support to the Afghans, many of them women, who are speaking out to condemn such despicable acts.

Farkhunda was an Islamic studies teacher and a woman who had the courage to speak out when she saw something she felt was wrong. In raising her voice, she, like many women in Afghanistan, become a victim of what she was fighting against. Farkhunda’s death is sadly not unique. Violence against women in Afghanistan is a prevalent issue. Her death, captured on video, sheds light on the ignorance and superstitious beliefs that are keeping Afghanistan from moving forward and healing as a country.

We join with the human rights and women’s rights activists in Afghanistan and around the world in demanding the investigation and punishment of the criminals who perpetrated this act. We call upon the Afghan government to enact and enforce laws that protect women and prevent such violence in the future.

We hope that the publicity and outcry raised continue, and that the Afghan nation takes this opportunity to enact true change to ensure such horrific acts never happen again. It is up to all of us to ensure that Farkhunda will not be forgotten, that her heroism remains an example for generations to come as they fight for women’s rights in Afghanistan.
Unique Gifts, Handmade in Afghanistan
Unique Gifts, Handmade in Afghanistan
For many of us, now is the season for giving… and occasionally treating . ASA has a lot of beautiful and unique items, all handmade by craftspeople in Afghanistan, just in time for the holiday season. Check out our merchandize site and take a look at our selection of purses, leatherwork and embroidery.

Each item is one-of-a-kind. Donations help in two ways:
  • By purchasing the item directly from the artisan, ASA is directly stimulating the economy of Afghanistan.
  • 100% of donations will be used to purchase more crafts, when possible, and to support development projects in Afghanistan.
Artists and craftspeople in Afghanistan have been creating beautiful jewelry, leather goods, and needlework for centuries. But the ongoing conflict means it is often difficult for these entrepreneurs to display their work outside of the region. In these days of globalized mass production, why not donate to ASA and select one of these beautiful, hand-crafted, and unique items? You’ll help support a worker in Afghanistan, provide funds for social programs, and get something lovely to go with that warm and fuzzy feeling of helping out.

Farsi and English Children’s Book
ASA is excited to announce the first phase of a new project.
Do you remember the stories you read as a child? What if you had no storybooks? What if many of the books you saw were donated, and written in a language you didn’t understand?

Impoverished children in Afghanistan often lack access to books in their native language, Farsi. At the same time, the children of Persian expatriates living around the world also have very few books in Farsi/Dari available.

ASA will be producing a children’s book with an original story about Afghan children, written in both English and Farsi and illustrated by an Afghan illustrator. The books will be distributed in Afghanistan, and sold throughout North America to raise funds for book distribution and other ASA social programs. As we get this book into production, we need input from supporters, parents – anyone who has or knows a child under 9 years old, whether you speak and read Farsi or not!

We ask you to please take no more than 10 minutes to answer our quick survey for our children’s book project. Just click the link below… and thanks!

Orphan Education in Jalalabad
ASA continues to support Mir Mohammad Yusif Vocational School (MMYVS), run by International Orphan Care, in the city of Jalalabad. ASA provides sponsorship for ten orphan children, both boys and girls. Through these efforts, we hope impoverished children like Alia and Kamran will have better chance in life. Read more >>
