Write for Us
We welcome original, genuinely useful contributions about giving, volunteering, humanitarian work and nonprofit management. Here is how it works.
What we publish
Nonprofit Compass readers are donors, volunteers, nonprofit staff and people thinking about starting an organization. Contributions should help them do something better. Topics that fit well include:
- Practical nonprofit operations: governance, budgeting, compliance, volunteer management, grant writing and reporting.
- Smart and effective giving: evaluating organizations, workplace giving, planned giving basics.
- Humanitarian and development practice explained for a general audience.
- Responsible volunteering and community organizing.
- Tools and services for nonprofits, written as balanced, informative guides rather than advertisements.
Types of contributions
Guest contributions
Unpaid articles written by practitioners or subject-matter experts. Guest articles are labeled “Guest contribution” at the top of the page and carry the real name of the author with a short, accurate bio.
Sponsored contributions
Articles published in exchange for payment or other compensation. Sponsored articles are labeled “Sponsored” at the top of the page, together with the name of the sponsor. Terms for sponsored placements are available on request.
Link policy
- Every outbound link that is paid for, or that appears in a sponsored article, uses
rel="sponsored". - Links must point to relevant, working, non-deceptive pages. We remove links that later redirect to unrelated or harmful content.
- We limit the number of commercial links per article and may remove links that do not help the reader.
- We do not sell links inside existing editorial guides.
Editorial requirements
- Original and unpublished. Content must not appear elsewhere, including on your own site.
- Accurate. Facts and figures must be verifiable; include sources for any statistic. No invented quotes, testimonials or case studies.
- Practical. Clear structure, plain language and actionable advice. A typical length is 1,000–2,000 words.
- Honest. Disclose any relationship with organizations or products you mention.
- Edited. We edit for clarity, accuracy, style and length, and we may decline any piece at any stage.
What we will not publish
We reject content — and links to sites — involving any of the following:
- Gambling, casinos, betting or sweepstakes schemes.
- Adult or sexually explicit content.
- Cryptocurrency scams, “guaranteed return” investment schemes and get-rich-quick offers.
- Pharmaceuticals, prescription drugs, supplements making medical claims, or unlicensed pharmacies.
- Charity impersonation: content that pretends to be, or implies endorsement by, any charity or organization that has not authorized it.
- Fundraising appeals, donation links or payment requests of any kind. This site does not collect money for anyone.
- Hate, harassment, misinformation, or political campaign content.
How to pitch
- Read a few of our existing guides to get a sense of tone and depth.
- Email [email protected] with the subject line “Contribution pitch”.
- Include a working title, a short outline, whether the piece is a guest or sponsored contribution, and links to one or two writing samples.
We aim to review pitches promptly, but we cannot guarantee publication or a response to every pitch.
